Washington Governor Gregoire Signs TransAlta Energy Transition Bill

Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire is joined by TransAlta President & CEO – Steve Snyder, legislators, labor and environmental groups and other key bill proponents as she signs the bill into law.

Today marks an important day for the future of energy generation in Washington State. This morning, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire signed the TransAlta Energy Transition Bill into law at the company’s Centralia operating facility.

Joining the Governor was TransAlta CEO Steve Snyder, who addressed a crowd of legislators, labor and environmental leaders, and hundreds of TransAlta employees. In his remarks, Mr. Snyder called the agreement a new chapter for TransAlta and its work in the Pacific Northwest. He reiterated the company’s commitment to balancing the world’s increasing energy demand while minimizing its environmental footprint.

The signing of the bill represents significant collaboration among policymakers, environmentalist, labor leaders and TransAlta around the common goal of reducing emissions from energy production without unduly disrupting the local economy. Through all sides listening to each other’s concerns and setting realistic expectations, we established an agreement that works for everyone. As other states look to change their energy generation portfolios, we hope that our efforts in Washington can serve as a model for collaboration.

The law is a significant milestone but much hard work lies ahead. TransAlta will continue to work actively to support our employees and community during the transition. This includes advocating for effective implementation of the community investment and energy efficiency and technology funds created by the law, as well as ongoing communication about key milestones and developments. We are currently developing plans to construct a large-scale natural gas plant at the existing site. As part of the law, replacement generation in Lewis County will receive expedited permitting, which will help us meet this goal.

We will provide regular updates on TransAlta’s efforts in the Pacific Northwest on the community page, so check back often to learn more.
