Health & Safety

What we believe

The health and safety of our employees, the communities and the environment where we operate are of paramount importance at TransAlta. We believe that achieving zero incidents is possible.

Our signature workforce safety program, Target Zero, is a way of working that is integrated into all that we do. Our Environment, Health and Safety policy and management system based on the OHSAS 18001 framework, guides our way through continuous improvement. Through effective training, planning and implementation, hazards can effectively be controlled or eliminated. Our safety management system reviews our practices; periodically auditing tasks and updating corporate policy to ensure the highest standards for health and safety.

This belief extends to:

  • A work environment where all known hazards are eliminated or safeguarded.
  • People who understand their jobs, are properly trained, are mentally and physically fit, and follow proper work practices so that safety is integrated into all tasks performed.
  • An empowered workforce where individuals take responsibility for their own safety, the safety of those they work with, and the safety of the communities surrounding our operations.

What we want to achieve:

  • Zero workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Improved occupational health and safety leadership.
  • Achieve a best-in-class environment, health and safety program.
