 Sundance Pier
Protecting the environments in which we live and work is important to TransAlta. Pictured here is a pier at our Sundance, Alberta facility. When a train derailment threatened the lake and our power plants in 2005, TransAlta employees went to extraordinary lengths to protect the local environment and the plant.

Sustainable Development

TransAlta has a long history of taking on the challenges of sustainable development: encouraging and promoting socially and environmentally sustainable economic development.

As part of our open relationship with stakeholders, we publish a Report on Sustainability each year.  If you would like more information about our activities and future plans, view our 2007 Report on Sustainability.

Our goal is to continue to demonstrate that sustainable development is a core value of our business by:

  • providing open and concise public reports of our progress annually;
  • applying more rigorous standards in our annual reporting;
  • enhancing the environmental component of our Environmental Health and Safety Management System to meet ISO 14001 standards, and upgrading our health and safety programs to meet OHSAS 18001 standards.;
  • striving to achieve world-class safety performance by eliminating workplace injury incidents;
  • delivering net reductions in greenhouse gas and other emissions;
  • facilitating responsible and credible public consultation; and
  • participating in national and provincial processes to develop public policy.

As TransAlta continues to meet and exceed its strategic growth targets, our job gets tougher and more complex. But we're up to the challenge. We believe that balancing the demands of environmental protection, economic growth and good corporate citizenship doesn't have to be a trade-off. In fact, we've proven that it's good for business.

TransAlta has been selected as a member company on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes (DJSI) every year since its inception in 2000. Inclusion in the DJSI is granted exclusively to companies that lead their industries in the pursuit of sustainability by setting standards for best practice and demonstrating superior environmental, social and economic performance.
