Turbine blade installation at the Ardenville Wind Facility in southern

TransAlta has constructed over the last two years.
In October, TransAlta recognized a significant milestone in our wind operations. With the final turbine installations at our Ardenville project in southern Alberta and our Kent Hills 2 project in New Brunswick, TransAlta is on track to surpass 1,000 megawatts of installed wind capacity in Canada by the end of this year.
“With the recent additions, TransAlta will operate 18 commercial wind facilities across Canada in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick," explained Cynthia Johnston, VP renewable operations.
Reaching 1,000 megawatts is very significant; especially when you consider how recently wind energy has become a commercial technology in Canada. “In less than 10 years, TransAlta has gone from zero to 1,000 megawatts and TransAlta is now Canada’s largest producer of wind power, operating over a third of the country’s installed wind capacity,” explained Jason Edworthy, director of community relations.
“By deliberately 'testing the waters' in early years, then investing proactively in both our own new projects and quality acquisitions, we were able to steadily grow our wind portfolio. We continue to be very committed to wind technology and increasing our clean and renewable generation sources,” he went on to say.
To celebrate this significant milestone, the company will be hosting a barbecue in Fort Macleod for local landowners, community leaders, First Nations and wind industry players on Saturday, October 23.
“Southern Alberta is the birthplace of commercial wind power in Canada, so it is the right place to celebrate this milestone and the strides we’ve made over the last decade,” explained Johnston. “We would like to thank the communities that support our sustainability efforts and our employees for their hard work and commitment.”
