TransAlta’s Yuma plant is a 50-megawatt cogeneration project located in Yuma, Arizona. The Yuma plant uses natural gas as the fuel for its turbine, and efficiently produces energy in two forms -- electric and thermal (steam).
The facility uses natural gas to produce two products - electricity and steam - and is therefore referred to as cogeneration facility. A portion of the steam is extracted and delivered to an industrial company located adjacent to the power plant, which uses the steam for processing and cooling. By recycling steam that has already performed useful work, a cogeneration facility can increase efficiency by maximizing fuel use.
TransAlta holds a 50 per cent interest in U.S. electricity generation company CE Generation LLC, which includes the Yuma plant. MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company owns the other 50 per cent. MidAmerican is the plant operator.
