Wabamun

The Wabamun power plant is the first of TransAlta's three coal-fired generating plants built in the Wabamun Lake area of Alberta. The first of the three units began commercial operations in 1956. The plant is located in the Village of Wabamun, 70 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta.

TransAlta plans to stop operating the Wabamun power plant in four phases with the final shut-down of Unit 4 slated for March 2010. Until then, the plant will continue to be an important source of low-cost power for Albertans.

The decommissioning of Wabamun plant is setting the standard for how coal-fired plants will be decommissioned in future. Materials are being recycled and reused wherever possible. Decisions are being made in conjunction with the Village of Wabamun, and land is being reclaimed to a variety of end uses.

TransAlta is also committed to keeping everyone affected by our plans to stop operating the plant informed about our progress. The Wabamun Decommissioning project site provides details on the phased shut down of the plant. If you have any questions about the decommissioning process, contact: wabamun_decommissioning@transalta.com.
