Power Resources

The Power Resources facility is a 200-megawatt natural gas-fired cogeneration project located near Big Spring, Texas.

The facility uses natural gas to produce two products - electricity and steam - and is therefore referred to as cogeneration facility. A portion of the steam is extracted and delivered to an industrial company located adjacent to the power plant, which uses the steam for processing and cooling. By recycling steam that has already performed useful work, a cogeneration facility can increase efficiency by maximizing fuel use.

The facility has two General Electric gas turbine generators, one Hitachi steam turbine generator and two Deltak heat recovery steam generators. The power is sold to Texas Utilities and steam to Alon USA Inc.

TransAlta holds a 50 per cent interest in U.S. electricity generation company CE Generation LLC, which includes the Power Resources plant. MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company owns the other 50 per cent. MidAmerican is the plant operator.
