Meridian

The Meridian cogeneration plant began supplying electricity to the Saskatchewan power grid in December 1999. The plant also produces steam for Husky's Lloydminster heavy oil upgrader operations.

TransAlta and Husky are joint-venture partners in the Meridian plant.

SaskPower has a 25-year power purchase agreement with TransAlta and Husky to buy 210 megawatts of electrical capacity annually from the facility. This agreement represents SaskPower's first large-scale cogeneration energy purchase.

Environmental Highlights

Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity and steam from a single fuel source. The plant uses two natural-gas-fired turbines to generate electricity. Waste heat from the gas turbines is used to create steam which industrial users, like Husky, can use in their operations. Creating two products from one fuel source improves plant efficiency.
