The fuel for three of our coal-fired plants west of Edmonton, Alberta comes from the Highvale Mine, the largest of our surface coal mines, adjacent to our plants. The Whitewood Mine stopped mining operations in 2010 and reclamation at this mine is complete. A third mine in Centralia, Washington supplied coal to our Centralia plant until November 2006, when TransAlta stopped active mining operations to focus on compliance and reclamation activities. Fuel for the Centralia plant is now brought by rail from the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming.
TransAlta is committed to returning mined land back to its pre-mined or other suitable and approved use. To learn more about land reclamation and what we have achieved, visit our Report on Sustainability Environmental Performance Section.
