Mines in Operation

The fuel for three of our coal-fired plants west of Edmonton, Alberta comes from the Highvale Mine, one of two surface coal mines adjacent to the plants. The Whitewood Mine stopped mining operations in 2010 and is fully focused on reclamation. A third mine in Centralia, Washington supplied coal to our Centralia plant until November 2006, when TransAlta stopped active mining operations to focus on compliance and reclamation activities. Fuel for the Centralia plant is now brought by rail from the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming.

TransAlta is committed to returning mined land back to its pre-mined or other suitable and approved use. To see how that's done, visit our Whitewood Mine page where we describe how we've already reclaimed almost three-quarters of the 1,822 hectares of land that has been mined there.
