Yellow Falls Hydroelectric Project

Yellow Falls Power Limited Partnership (YFP) is proposing to build, own, and operate a 16 MW run-of-river hydroelectric project at Yellow Falls on the Mattagami River, approximately 18 km upstream (south) of Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario.

The initial project concept presented in the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) Report consisted of a 20 MW project located at Island Falls, approximately 2 km north (downstream) of Yellow Falls. Because of this, the project was initially referred to as the Island Falls Hydroelectric Project throughout this first portion of the environmental assessment process.

Between 2005 and 2008 - during public review of the draft EA and consultation with agencies and the public - a potential project modification was identified that would address many of the concerns raised during the review of the draft EA. YFP made a decision to relocate the dam and powerhouse structures approximately 2 km upstream of Island Falls to Yellow Falls to address stakeholder comments and concerns. Because of the relocation of the dam and powerhouse, the nameplate capacity of the project changed from 20 MW to 16 MW and the project became known as the Yellow Falls Hydroelectric Project to more accurately reflect its location.
