Through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc. and Glacier Power Ltd., TransAlta is proposing to build a run-of-the-river hydro facility across the Peace River about two kilometres upstream of the Highway #2 bridge crossing at Dunvegan, AB. The facility will produce power from the flow of the river without storing water, and therefore will not regulate or change water flow downstream of the facility.
The proposed Dunvegan project is an environmentally responsible, low-impact development of the hydroelectric potential of the Peace River. Once in operation, we expect this hydroelectric facility to be a 100-year asset for the community and the province of Alberta. The project is further evidence of TransAlta’s commitment to the sustainable development of renewable energy resources.
The project will feature innovative passageways for migrating fish and we have both funded and coordinated the creation of a state-of-the-art ice model that is specific to the Peace River - a major research development.
Once constructed, Dunvegan will generate approximately 600,000 MWh per year of electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Construction is expected to last three to four years and generate approximately 500 person-years of employment.
We are extremely pleased with the strong local support we have have received for this project and will continue to work with local communities and stakeholders to ensure concerns are identified and effectively addressed.
