Our Structure

TransAlta Corporation is a power generation and wholesale marketing company with more than 2,300 employees and operations in Canada, the United States, and Australia. Our head office is located in Calgary, Alberta. We are 100 per cent owned by investors and trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange (symbol: TA), and on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: TAC).

We are organized into two separate business segments: Generation and Energy Marketing. Our Generation business is comprised of coal plants, wind farms, hydro facilities, geothermal facilities, one biomass facility, two surface coal mines in Alberta, Canada, and one at Centralia, Washington. In Alberta, we mined more than 12 million tonnes of coal in 2009; in Centralia, mining operations have stopped but we are still responsible for reclamation of the mine. With 8,148 megawatts of capacity owned or operated at the end of 2009, excluding plants in development, TransAlta produced 45,736 gigawatt-hours and maintained an average plant availability of 85.1 per cent in 2009.

TransAlta’s Energy Marketing business focuses on enhancing returns of our generation assets through a disciplined approach to asset optimization and capitalizing on short-term market opportunities. We match buyers and sellers, arrange for transmission capacity, and schedule movement of our commodity product. We do not sell directly to consumers.

In 2001, TransAlta divested its transmission business, with the exception of transmission lines that cross land owned by 13 First Nations groups in Alberta.
